Volunteering
Our events and ministries simply wouldn’t be able to run without the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, serving Jesus by using their God-given gifts and talents to help out wherever possible.
We’ve listed some key volunteer roles below that are available at ABC, so that you might find an area of the church’s mission that you’re passionate about, and a role that’s right for you.
Please click the button to ‘Join a team’ bellow, and scroll down to take a look through the list of available roles. Before committing to join a team, you’ll get to discuss the role and your suitability with the ministry leader. Joining a team does require some level of commitment, but don’t worry if you can’t commit regularly, most teams work from a rota meaning you’ll be able to serve as frequently/infrequently as you are able or wish to.
Youth and Kids Work
Most roles working with kids or young people require leaders to have a DBS check (free of charge) and as a church we provide ongoing training for our leaders which includes safeguarding, first aid and other training events.
Cornerstone Leader
Thursdays in term time 7:00pm till 9:15pm
Working with young people aged 13 to 18
Every week there’s something different happening at Cornerstone, from big crazy games, to craft nights, trips out and talent shows. We need a diverse team of leaders with different skill sets to enable this vast range of activities to take place. Leaders could be up front running things, or behind the scenes setting up, in the kitchen or running tech.
Friday Club Leader
Fridays in term time 6:30pm till 8:45pm
Working with children aged 9 to 13
The structure of Friday Club is the same each week, with the kids running around for the first half of the evening getting involved in games, social time and craft. Everyone then gathers for a quiet time and structured game. There are many different roles for leaders, but most important is getting involved with what’s going on and talking with the kids.
Open House Leader
Fridays in term time 8:15pm till 10:45pm
Working with young people aged 13 to 18
Our new drop-in style youth club has the same activities on offer each week, such as pool, air hockey, video games and football. The role of a leader at Open House is to oversee and encourage these activities, but mainly to get to know the young people who attend, build relationships with them and help them feel at home in our church building.
Registration Team
Thursdays in term time 7:15pm till 9:15pm
Fridays in term time 6:45pm till 10:45pm
Previously, registration of kids and youth into our clubs has been done by their respective teams, but we’re looking to launch a new team of people dedicated to seeing our children and young people safely in and our of the building throughout the evenings, and being a key link with parents dropping off and picking up.
Lighthouse Leader
Sunday mornings, Sunday afternoons and midweek groups
Working with children aged 0 to 13
Lighthouse might not look like it used to before the pandemic, as we’re now running a varied programme of events including midweek meetings. You don’t need to be a teacher to be a lighthouse leader, all you need is a heart for sharing the love of Jesus with our kids.
Youth Bible Study Leader
Sundays in term time 5:45pm till 7:15pm
Sundays in term time 7:30pm till 9:00pm
Working with young people aged 13 to 18
Celebrations and After Eights are our discipleship groups for young people, where we explore the Bible together and what it means to follow Jesus. We already have a strong team leading these group, but we’re looking to grow the team. Leading would look similar to leading a small group, where you open up a topic with the group for discussion. Leaders need to be open and honest, and don’t need to know all the answers!
Tech Teams
If you’ve got a good handle on tech, then any of these roles might be right for you. Even if you’ve never done this specific role before, full training and assistance is provided.
Service Tech Team
Sundays 9:45pm till 12:30pm
Last Sunday of the month 5:30pm till 8:30pm
Producing and broadcasting our Sunday services require many technicians working together in different roles such as a computer operator, camera operator, audio engineer and video director. All these roles can easily be learnt over a few weeks, and you can shadow another member of the team until you’re confident. The tech team serves on Sunday mornings, Sunday evenings and for other one-off events too. There are also behind the scenes roles such as video editing and we’re looking for a rota coordinator too.
YouTube Administration
Weekly on Friday or Saturday
Each week, there’s a number of tasks that need doing to keep our YouTube channel up-to-date and ready for our next broadcast. We’re looking for someone to schedule our live streams, trim services once they've broadcast and make sure the right info is available alongside the videos. It’s a job that needs to be completed once a week, but is flexible on when that is.
Talks Library Management
Weekly on Monday or Tuesday
Our website has a well-used library of all our previous talks, beautifully organised with thumbnails, a summary of the talk and links to audio of the talk and a video of the whole service. It’s organised with tags of the Bible verses and speaker. All this information is produced by other people, and needs to be collated onto our website once a week, ideally at some point early in the week.
Hospitality Teams
If your heart is for serving others, then a hospitality team might be right for you.
Refreshments Team
Sunday mornings
Sunday evenings
Making people feel comfortable and welcome at one of our Sunday services can be done easily through a cup of tea! Our refreshment teams look after people with hot drinks on a Sunday morning and a wider range of refreshments before our Sunday evening service.
Welcome Team
Sunday mornings
Sunday evenings
The welcome team have a few practical duties to help Sunday services run smoothly and safely, but the focus is to give everyone a big, warm welcome when they enter the building.
Fellowship Lunch & Praise
Tuesdays
Our seniors ministry includes well attended events on Tuesdays where hot meals, tea, coffee and cake are enjoyed. For that hospitality to take place, there needs to be a big team of people involved with the catering and serving, as well as the washing up.
Alpha Hospitality Team
An evening of Alpha boasts good food, an interesting talk and engaging discussion, and the food is always a big draw! We’re looking for a team of people who are able to join the rota to cater meals and desserts for Alpha. Alpha runs at ABC annually for 10 or 11 weeks.
Ad-hoc Cake Bakers
There are many reasons why we might need cake! Certain services, Gala day, special events, holiday at home, youth weekends away, students and those in need of a little love, are a few situations where cake is a great help. If you’re able to bake an occasional cake, pop your name down here.
Ad-hoc Meal Makers
As practical support goes, having a meal delivered to your door when things aren’t going so well, is an immensely helpful blessing. Situations where someone might need meals vary, but as a church we love being able to respond by catering for a household when needed.
Other Ministry Teams
Worship Teams
Sunday mornings
Sunday evenings
We are very blessed to have a great team of talented musicians at ABC. Our worship leaders work with a band to lead sung worship at our Sunday services and we’re always looking for new talent to join the team. At the moment there’s a particular need for drummers.
Prayer Teams
Sunday evenings
Events
Prayer is such a key part of being a Christian for all of us, but we recognise that certain people are gifted with enabling others in prayer or the time and persistence to pursue God in prayer. Our Sunday evening prayer team works in the ministry time to pray with people and helps enable others to pray for one another, while the events prayer team covers events such as Alpha in prayer.
Creative Teams
Sunday evenings
Kids/youth/student birthday cards
We create space for creative worship and creative responses during ministry time at our Sunday evening services, and have a team of people involved in helping that to happen. Another creative ministry we are looking to launch is sending birthday cards to our kids, young people and students.
Set up/tear down Teams
Sunday mornings
Sunday evenings
At the moment we don’t have a caretaker, but with regular services and groups taking place in the building, there’s a lot of set up and tear down required, especially with the chairs in the main hall.
Gardening
At the moment we don’t have a caretaker, so if you’ve got your own lawn mower and would be able to help by cutting the grass, digging borders or other general garden maintenance, do let us know.
Summer Events
We run a few special events during the summer that need really big teams of helpers in many different roles. Dates of events TBC, but you can apply if you’re keen to help out and you’ll be kept in the loop about what’s happening and when.
If you’re able to serve on a team, please click the ‘Join a team’ button below. Thanks!
